Where to Stay in Manchester: Bunny’s Review of Hotel Gotham
Bunny’s Wild Manchester Days...
In her wild youth, Bunny spent a year studying in Manchester. She loved the city and she loved student life. Manchester represented everything she had always wanted to escape from in her home town.
Fast forward 20 years (gulp) and Bunny’s travels take her back to Manchester for a one night escape with Mr. Bunny. She was in town to see her old (quite literally) heroes Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, more commonly known as the Pet Shop Boys, in action. Mr. Bunny reluctantly joined, pretending not to like the music, the city or even the country, even though, or perhaps precisely because, his ancestors hail from the UK.
After lots of research, Bunny decided to spend her one night in Manchester at Hotel Gotham. The pictures of the hotel looked stylish, the reviews were mostly good and the price was right. She had realized early on that she would not be able to avoid those dreaded carpets in the rooms of any Manchester hotel. At least the carpets in Gotham looked cool.
Gotham lacks the amenities Bunny usually looks for in hotels, namely a spa, a pool, and a gym. That was OK since Bunny was in town for a different purpose, other than healthy living. Besides, Hotel Gotham had a rooftop bar and the rooms looked luxurious and quirky fun at the same time.
Bunny wanted to book the Bank Manager's Suite with a sexy bath tub but those rooms are in very short supply (even on a Sunday night). Instead, Bunny made a booking for Gotham Suite which didn’t look too shabby either…
Bunny’s visit to Gotham did not start in the best possible manner as the reception staff somehow forgot to offer her the complimentary drink that most other customers report to have experienced. Luckily, Bunny doesn’t hold grudges (much).
Bunny was quite happy with the look of the hotel though, and even happier when she was escorted to her Gotham Suite. It was gorgeous! Bunny had specifically requested an airy corner suite with lots of light, and this is exactly what she got, with a great view over Manchester!
In addition, the suite’s bathroom was fabulous and the bed very comfortable and luxurious. Bunny also appreciated all the little touches in the room, from small curious items to the “Gotham newspaper” left on the desk. It created a certain vibe that was very easy to like.
One of the things that originally attracted Bunny to Hotel Gotham was the hotel's afternoon tea experience. It came highly rated and Bunny has always been a sucker for afternoon tea so she simply had to experience it.
Bunny made her reservation in advance (recommended) and requested a vegetarian version of the tea tray as well as a table next to a window. The requests were honoured and the Bunnies were happy to find themselves almost alone in the Honey restaurant on a late Sunday afternoon. It was nicer to enjoy afternoon tea and watch the rainy weather than to be stuck in it.
The afternoon tea came with a possibility to upgrade to champagne. Of course, Bunny did exactly that. Otherwise it was the usual cakes, cones and finger sandwiches, all delicious and all nicely presented. For Bunny, it was the perfect way to kick off the nostalgic visit.
Bunny also had a quick look at Gotham’s rooftop terrace but as her visit occurred in February, the look was very brief indeed. The terrace must be nice on those warm summer evenings though...
Instead of the rooftop, Bunny enjoyed a cocktail at Club Brass, the hotel's fabulous VIP lounge on the 7th floor. She downed a delicious drink (Cool Girl) and very much approved of the bar, even if the service was a bit hit and miss.
Breakfast was served in the same restaurant as afternoon tea. It was a pleasant affair, albeit not exactly a dream selection for vegetarians and healthy eaters, such as Bunny. In other words, Bunny was practically forced to eat a croissant instead of her usual superfood breakfast items. Oh well, she survived. And Mr. Bunny had no complaints whatsoever. That must have been a first.
All in all, Bunny very much enjoyed her brief stay in Gotham. The room was fabulous and the bed very comfortable. In addition, the hotel has an excellent location in the middle of the action (Bunny was able to walk to the Manchester Arena for the Pet Shop Boys’ gig). Gotham also looks stylish all around, not just the rooms.
And a special mention goes to the concierge who provided excellent service and very helpful advice and recommendations during Bunny’s stay. Cheers!
