Spice Island Beach Resort – Sublime All Inclusive Hotel in Grenada

Welcome surprise

The year 2024 was not the best for Bunny. For months, she endured the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, which wreaked havoc on her home island of Carriacou on July 1, leaving her to live through several miserable months without electricity while repairing and renovating her house.

Her first post-Beryl break came a long 4 months after the disaster as a two-night stay in Grenada, with Mr. Bunny in tow. They decided to treat themselves to the best, opting to stay at Spice Island Beach Resort. Spice Island is one of Grenada’s premier hotels, an all-inclusive haven situated right on Grand Anse Beach.

All Inclusive Hotels in Grenada

Grenada is not widely known for its all-inclusive hotels (and that’s for the better, Bunny says). Only a few hotels, such as Sandals and Royalton Grenada, are truly all-inclusive. Others, like Coyaba and Mount Cinnamon, offer all-inclusive as an option.

Bunny has stayed at Sandals Grenada and thinks it’s wonderful. For those seeking a more affordable or family-friendly all-inclusive option, Royalton is a fine choice—unless you’re a foodie.

Spice Island Beach Resort, however, offers an all-inclusive experience on a different level. It’s miles away from a typical cookie-cutter Caribbean all-inclusive hotel, providing a more personalized luxury experience. It’s definitely Bunny’s favorite choice among the all-inclusive options in Grenada—and she can be a discerning traveler.

Excellent Reputation of Spice Island

Spice Island has a long legacy of excellence and high standards for luxury. It has been family-owned and operated by the Hopkin family since the 1960s. Its list of past guests includes numerous royals and other distinguished visitors—and now, a certain Bunny.

The resort's most recent accolade is the TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice Best of the Best 2024 Award. Bunny was aware of all the hype, but her expectations were still exceeded when she stayed at Spice Island.

Best Service in Grenada

Bunny was highly impressed with the level of service at Spice Island, starting from the reservation process (polite, efficient, and even offering Bunny an upgrade) and continuing throughout her stay. She wouldn’t hesitate to declare it the best service she has experienced anywhere in Grenada. Every member of the staff was friendly, professional, and attentive. Bravo!

The resort also featured plenty of those little touches that make a luxurious stay feel truly exceptional: a complimentary breakfast upon arrival, early check-in, a welcoming amenity in the room, eucalyptus-infused cold towels, and watermelon popsicles offered at the beach. Bunny could truly switch off, relax, and leave all the hurricane horrors behind her for a while.

Spice Island Rooms

Bunny was truly fortunate to be upgraded to a Luxury Almond Pool Suite during her visit. The suite was spacious, stylish, and wonderfully private, blending indoor and outdoor living with a sizeable private pool in the garden. The bed was luxurious, and all the furnishings were of high quality. The marble bathroom was spacious, featuring a bathtub and lovely Molton Brown toiletries.

And yes, Spice Island also passed Bunny’s test for true luxury.

Bunny's room

In fact, Bunny could have had a fantastic holiday without ever leaving the suite. She relished the luxurious room, private garden and pool, room service, and the fully stocked inclusive mini bar. The suite also had a Nespresso machine and Alexa voice service, allowing Bunny to play her own (admittedly dodgy) music while frolicking in the pool.

For those who prefer to vacation just steps away from the sea, there are beach suites offering that option at Spice Island. However, you’ll need to sacrifice some privacy, as people can walk directly in front of your terrace. Somewhat reclusive Bunny was content to stay in her cocoon, even if it meant—gasp—a 100-meter walk to the beach.

Grand Anse Beach

Grand Anse, Grenada's most celebrated beach, lives up to its reputation with ease. Nestled on the quieter end of this picturesque stretch is Spice Island, offering a serene escape with fewer crowds—a definite plus in Bunny’s book. Here, the soft white sand and shimmering turquoise waters are perfectly complemented by the resort’s impeccable beach service.

Bunny enjoyed a blissful afternoon by the sea, with a seemingly endless parade of drinks, cold towels, and popsicles brought her way by the friendly staff.

Activities

Bunny peeked into the gym but decided against using it—she was on holiday, after all. She didn’t try the spa either but made great use of the yoga pavilion on the beach. It was blissfully quiet (read: empty) all the time, with a pleasant breeze and dreamy views of the sea. Although Bunny didn’t participate in any of the organized yoga classes, she did bring her own yoga mat and, along with a somewhat reluctant Mr. Bunny, enjoyed a private yoga session there every morning.

Bunny also tried stand-up paddleboarding, though the sea was a bit too choppy for that activity during her stay.

Naturally, Spice Island has an inviting swimming pool in their gardens. Bunny is almost ashamed to admit that she didn’t use the pool even once. She was so content with her private pool that she simply didn’t feel the need.

Superb Dining

At Spice Island Beach Resort, the all-inclusive experience is nothing short of exceptional. Guests can indulge in daily breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner, along with premium drinks and cocktails throughout their stay. And the best part? Everything is of the highest quality.

Breakfast is served at the picturesque Oliver’s restaurant, located right by the beach. Bunny was enchanted by the locally sourced delights, including a variety of fresh juices like tamarind, soursop, and five fingers. Unlike many other resorts in Grenada, where sourcing local ingredients can be challenging, Spice Island makes a concerted effort to offer fresh, local produce. This commitment to authenticity is a standout feature in a sea of imported, generic offerings. Come here for fresh, delicious food with local flavors, Bunny recommends.

For lunch, the Sea and Surf Terrace & Bar offers a varied menu, while dinner presents a choice between Oliver’s and the Sea and Surf BBQ. Bunny opted for Oliver’s, drawn by its more vegetarian-friendly offerings. The upscale dining experience at Oliver’s features a fusion of Caribbean and Creole flavors, with dishes crafted from local produce and spices. Bunny was very happy with her vegetarian meals and particularly the mouthwatering desserts. She was also relieved to find that the dress code wasn’t as intimidating as she had expected.

Evening entertainment at Spice Island is low-key. On one of the nights, a talented saxophone player set the perfect mood by the restaurant, offering a soothing soundtrack to the tranquil surroundings. Don’t come to Spice Island expecting a party atmosphere, Bunny says. Instead, relish the natural symphony of frogs and insects serenading guests from the beautifully maintained gardens.

Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea might not be a common indulgence in the tropics—Sri Lanka's Ceylon Tea Trails being a notable exception—but for Bunny, who has a soft spot for tea and scones, the discovery of Spice Island’s daily Afternoon Tea service was a delightful surprise.

When it comes to desserts, Spice Island really excelled, Bunny thinks. She found herself indulging in an impressive array of chocolate-passionfruit bombs and cheesecakes throughout her stay. Even the ice cream was extraordinary, with the homemade lemongrass variety ranking among the best Bunny had ever savored. It’s clear that at Spice Island, the sweet treats are just as memorable as the stunning surroundings.

Spice Island or Silversands?

Which of Grenada’s premier hotels should you choose for your vacation? Both have excellent reviews and are located on the magnificent Grand Anse Beach. Choose Spice Island if you prefer a more traditional style and exceptional service, Bunny suggests. Opt for Silversands if you enjoy stunning modern architecture and want to make a splash on your Instagram account. Neither option is inexpensive, but Bunny believes that Spice Island might offer a bit more value for your money.
